Tirebiter is a 6” diameter space shot vehicle that is part of the DCX family. It is the first space shot to fly with a rubber liner, a big technology change from the past. Tirebiter had three fins to minimize drag. However, Tirebiter experienced an aerodynamic failure about 6.5 seconds into flight. The vehicle looped around, and took a downwards trajectory while the motor was still burning. During this time the fins of the vehicle shredded off, and the nosecone come off the airframe, shredding through the upper airframe. After searching the Blackrock desert for a few hours, the motor case, nosecone, and fins were recovered.
